Creative therapy is something that I am passionate about. There are many different ways that you can utilise creativity in the therapy room and I wanted to talk to you about one I had during training, to give you an idea of what we could do together if you chose to work with me.
Creative therapy is a way to help clients tap into emotions and feelings when they are finding it a struggle, or when they find it difficult to identify what it is they are feeling. It can also be a way of communicating what you are feeling with your therapist without needing to say the exact words.
When I attended a creative training session, I was still in the middle of my counselling training journey. A part of this creative day was looking at using images. We were given a pack of cards and asked to choose one that meant something to us, or called to us in some way. The image above is the card I chose. It resonated with me because during my training I was also in the middle of being made redundant at work, so my path was uncertain. The trees in that image depicted how I was feeling, that everything was closing in on me and I couldn’t see the way out. However the image of the winged horse was my guiding light. It would help me find my path. I also felt that when I found my path, it would be magical of sorts. It helped me to remember that what I was working hard to achieve, would be worth it in the end. It was a positive in the dark. I had been focusing so much of what was going on around me that I forgotten what I aiming for, and how much I was enjoying what I was doing. It gave me focus.
Someone else looking at this image might make different connections completely.
